  • In 1995 Category 4 Hurricane Luis slammed into St Maarten.
  • Food Centre Building supermarket and warehouse (designed by others) on BROUWER ROAD was demolished by Hurricane Luis (See photos, left).
  • Engineer Nick Brisbane was contacted and engaged by Food Centre owners the Ramchandani family to redesign the Food Centre facility (Now Kooyman Mega Store).
  • The design mandate was to design a totally new structure to withstand Category 4 hurricane force winds, 150 MPH wind speed.

The new 80,000 SQ.FT building (now Kooyman Megastore) was designed by Brisbane Associates
and built in 1996 by Fairfix St Maarten.

  • In September 2017 Hurricane Irma was the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic packing sustained winds of 185 MPH.
  • Hurricane Irma slammed into St Maarten in early September 2017 causing widespread damage.
  • Kooyman Mega Store experienced minimal damage and withstood the ravages of Hurricane Irma.
  • Note also that Sangs supermarket designed by Brisbane Associates in year 2000 also withstood the ravages of Hurricane Irma - (See Photo, right).
